"It's Liberty Day,
It's swinging bells,
It's capricious, and it's just swell
It's a little cottage built in the Craftsman style,
It's fresh oranges, rhythms, melodies*, and smiles,
It's Glenn Miller playing on the hit parade,
It's you and me, and we've got -- it -- made.
She says it's funny after all that we've been through
That we still talk the way that lovers do."
I miss the Johnny Favourite Swing Orchestra. They're Canadian, you know! It's nice cheery peppy music to do work to.
Still, today is not a good day. Any day you walk in the door to work thinking about when you can go home is not good!**
To evil twin: Futurama tonight? CURRRRRRRRRRSE! I'd say the Melting Pot, but they're probably booked full already.

* I typed melanies at first.
** Coordinate frames! CURSES! Foiled again by legacy spherical earth data.

Ternary statements should be banned from the face of the earth. Sure, they look all clean and elegant, but who really wants to try to read these?
For those who don't know, the above statement translates as this in pseudocode...
alpha = (aLongBooleanExpression) ? beta : gamma;or
alpha = (aLongBooleanExpression) ? betaor
: gamma;
alpha = (aLongBooleanExpression)
? beta
: gamma;
For those who don't know, the above statement translates as this in pseudocode...
If (aLongBooleanExpression == true)ETA: I'm so surprised that no one caught the missing double-equals in the if statement... Heh.
alpha = beta;
Else
alpha = gamma;

... that there are what have been described to me as "religious wars" over indentations in code? I'm reading Sun's Java code conventions today to see just how bad I've been making $LeadDeveloper cry.*
Then again, I wince each time I see misplaced apostrophe's.**
* Not that much, actually. Well, not with the code formatting. The code itself, however... Heh. MATLAB just doesn't have the data type options Java does, so I use what I know.
** Hee hee hee. And I bet some of you just died a little inside seeing that! That is why I love you so much.

For some reason, receiving email from
sheryl67 and "The Safety Dance" have just enormously improved my mood.
Probably also has to do with writing up the end of week summary and realizing we made progress AND my computer ceasing its 5 minute freezes for a little bit. Every 15 minute a total freeze of the computer? Yeah, makes your yak want to throw the damned thing.

fencergirl! It's Friday! And in a month we go to Michigan! It's Friday! Amanda Palmer (from the Dresden Dolls) will be playing with the Boston Pops tonight! (Go here to listen in via Podcast!)

A commercial that features the Mythbusters, Mike Rowe, the Deadliest Catch guys, astronauts, and Stephen Hawking? Awesome!
I'll be humming "I love the oceans! I love real dirty things! I love hot magma! I love Egyptian Kings!" all day now.

She sent me to a link with this video the other day. I tend to run in phases of obsession with various songs-- one bad day it was Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters", another day it was Nine Inch Nails' "Heresy", still another was various track from the Dropkick Murphys' new album.*
So here's the latest obsession:

fencergirl batty. I'd get stuck on a song and play it repetitively for a day or more to completely absorb it, then move on. I think it was the 20th or so repeat of Tori Amos's "Bliss" that finally broke her that one day... She ordered me not to touch the stereo for the rest of the day or to put on headphones to listen to it.

It's very odd not to be transient any more.
blazepoet and I bought our house at what was probably a bad time, but we were both so tired of the migratory life and the noisy neighbors. I moved only once between 1980 and 1998 (other than 2 short summer programs). During college and grad school, with the associated dorm moves and summer programs, I moved my crap a total of 21 times [5 dorm rooms, 4 summer programs, 3 apartments]. It feels nice to be settled. It feels nice not to put everything I have in boxes. It feels nice to have a consistent phone number for once!

Watching Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals right now. Just remember: I grew up watching hockey. The Flyers, to be specific.

1. Think of the first word that comes to mind when you think of me.
2. Go to Google Images and search for that word.
3. Reply to this post with one of the pictures on the first page of results (don't tell me the word).
4. Put this in your own journal so that I can do the same.
In other news: Finally back on teh intarwebz! *waves hello*

In-laws arrived Saturday at dinner time. Thus far, removed split-rail fence, removed half rotten back fence, removed oodles of brush, filled 2 ton/16 cubic yard dumpster, put in a patio, installed hopefully woodchuck-, deer-, and bird-proof cage around vegetable and fruit garden, and numerous other tasks.
My father-in-law has been good about being understanding my allergies, as I think that each time I tried to help them I'd begin to sneeze and run through a box of tissues. Thus, I stayed indoors most of the time, did the cooking and cleaning, and did quite a bit of Work work. I'm hoping it will save us about 3 days this week. I did go outdoors enough to get sunburnt.
Mother-in-law flies to Baltimore tomorrow for a conference and returns on Friday. Father-in-law will be continuing home improvement projects, because that's his idea of a vacation. Next weekend: We go to Cape Cod! (Unless I have to stay behind and do work. A distinct possibility.)
I do rather like my in-laws. My parents and brother also came up for a barbecque this afternoon on the new patio, which was awesome. I'm glad our sets of parents get along.
Now I must return to entertaining them. Very much miss you all... You can send me emails and I can reply from work.
